The conference on Livestock, Climate Change and Food Security took place
in Madrid, Spain, on the 19th & 20th of May 2014.

This scientific meeting attracted 155 speakers and delegates from throughout the world and provided a platform for discussions on the challenges faced by the livestock sector in an effort to efficiently enhance its contribution to sustainable food supply in the context of climate variability.

Main topics

– Balance between animal food supply and demand over the course of the century according to a range of storylines ;
– Impacts of climate change, including climatic variability and extremes, on livestock production and pastures ;
– Emissions and removals of GHGs associated to livestock production systems and to grassland soils and their possible changes in the future ;
– Adaptation to climate change of the livestock sector ;
– Mitigation of GHG emissions from the livestock sector ;
– Contribution of the livestock sector to global and regional food security.

Side events 

Two post-conference workshops were organised on the 21st of May:

– workshop on Animal Health and Disease and GHG Mitigation  organised by the Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE JPI)

workshop on Grassland Sensitivity to Climate Change organised by the Grassland & Livestock group of the Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP).

These were followed by the 3rd Annual Meeting of the European Project AnimalChange (AN Integration of Mitigation and Adaptation options for sustainable Livestock production under CLIMATE CHANGE) held on the 22nd and 23rd of May.
